CHAPTER 3: BARNELL
In this portrait, I veered away from showing my model's actual face and only depicted two layers of their identity that I discovered in an interview I conducted with them: their past and their present. The quotes cut out of each layer are taken from the interview and express the essence of each layer. They are also designed to be hard to read because it takes time to understand someone, especially the sides they keep hidden. I understand that through my creative choices, I stray farther from their actual identities, so I look at each piece as a character created from real life inspiration and creative interpretation.
